The sovereignty of Northern Cyprus remains a pipe dream

Last Updated On: Apr 19 2021 08:29 Gmt+3
Ersin Tatar, the Ankara-backed president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said Turks in Cyprus deserve sovereignty, during a joint press event with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Friday.
This was the highlight of the day in the north of the ethnically divided Mediterranean island, which has long existed under the shadow of Turkey.
The remarks coincided with threats by Turkish authorities’ targeting a Turkish Cypriot top court calling for it to cancel its latest ruling on Koran courses in the country.
The constitutional court of the de-facto TRNC on Wednesday annulled a law, allowing Koran courses to be held by the Office of Religious Affairs, which acts under the influence of Turkey’s own Directorate of Religious Affairs, also known as Diyanet. ....

Turkish Cypriot opposition slams Erdoğan over his threats to top court

Last Updated On: Apr 17 2021 12:11 Gmt+3
The Turkish Cypriot opposition has slammed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for threatening the territory’s top court.
Erdoğan said on Friday that the Constitutional Court in the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) would face consequences for a recent ruling on the teaching of religious courses in the Turkish-controlled northern third of the Mediterranean island.
The court must quickly “amend its mistake, otherwise there will be repercussions with (Ankara taking) different steps”, Erdoğan said.
Judicial independence is the cornerstone of rule of law, and the statements by Turkish government authorities were no way acceptable, Tufan Erhürman, the head of the main opposition Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (CTP) said via his Facebook account. ....

During President Barack Obama s administration, then Vice President Joe Biden would occasionally sneak into Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. For security reasons, Biden would arrive late and leave early, as the Rev. Kevin Gillespie remembered it, but he would always stay for Holy Communion.
“He was just one of the crowd,” Gillespie recalled from those moments he celebrated the Mass. “From my vantage point, he walks his talk.”
Other D.C. religious leaders agree. They see a president who demonstrates how religion can be a driving force for good in their local communities. Just as Biden leaned on religion for comfort and healing from his personal pain and loss, D.C. religious leaders hope he’ll lean on his faith-based values to foster the kind of dialogue that will heal America’s open wounds.  ....

New restrictions imposed on private Islamic universities

New restrictions imposed on private Islamic universities
In an effort to avoid lecturers and students being left high and dry by universities closing due to an ‘oversupply’ of places at a burgeoning number of private Islamic colleges, the government has imposed strict restrictions in the past year on new private Islamic institutions and new study programmes within existing institutions.
Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population and around 1,155 Islamic higher education institutions, mainly teaching Islamic sciences. Only 97 are state-owned under the Religious Affairs Ministry. The remaining 1,058 are private.
An additional 3,250 Islamic institutions come under the Education and Culture Ministry, of which 122 are state-owned institutions teaching a broader curriculum than Islamic science. ....
