IF_DO designs Bloomsbury home makeover

London architects IF_DO lead the design of John Street, a listed Bloomsbury home made over for a family of four
A Bloomsbury home in a Grade II-listed building in the heart of London has been given a makeover by architecture studio IF_DO. The practice, headed by Thomas Bryans, Sarah Castle and Al Scott, was invited to transform a tired townhouse into a modern family home – John Street – that would balance sophistication and robustness through clever design.
The project, which began in 2016, was commissioned by a young couple, who now live in the property with their two children. With the couple seeing this as their ‘forever home’, say the architects, the ‘key aim was to create a comfortable environment in which to raise their family, while also an elegant home in which to entertain’. At the same time, the architects were keen (and required) to maintain the essence of the original, late-18th-century home.

Chatham Chairman Chester Ellis bullies commissioners, cuts off public comment

Editorial Page Editor Adam Van Brimmer blogs on local topics of interest most weekday mornings in the “Savannah’s Town Square” Facebook group. The following is an excerpt from one of those posts. Join the group at Facebook.com by searching "Savannah's Town Square."
Chatham Commission Chairman Chester Ellis is in midst of his first leadership test, and he's proving woefully under-prepared.
Last Friday's commission meeting, just the second of his tenure as chairman, devolved into a kangaroo court, with Ellis quasi-bullying his fellow commissioners over an unorthodox appointment of a former commissioner to the Chatham Area Transit board.
Even worse, Ellis cut off public comment on the appointment of Tabitha Odell, who is a key player in the recent controversial firing of CAT's CEO. The situation has met with public uproar, and Ellis' behavior did nothing to temper the outrage.

Former Chatham Commission chair hints at 2022 election run against Rep. Carter

This is a column by Editorial Page Editor Adam Van Brimmer.
Al Scott has taken to the political stage twice in his life, first at the state level, where he served in the Georgia General Assembly and as Georgia’s labor commissioner; and more recently as Chatham County’s top official, the Chatham Commission chairman.
He’s not ruling out an Act III.
Few caught the bombshell Scott recently dropped in the closing moments in an interview for the Difference Makers podcast. Scott discussed his political career for close to an hour, culminating in the final question: What's next as far as your public service career?

Chatham County Commission starts year with new chairman, commissioners

Greeting his colleagues with a fist bump, Chester Ellis took his seat as chairman of the Chatham Commission for the first time on Friday along with four new commissioners during the first meeting of the year. Ellis succeeded former Chairman Al Scott, who met his term limit for the seat.
Along with Ellis, who formerly served as commissioner for District 8, new members  Larry “Gator” Rivers, Tanya Milton, Aaron Whitely and Kenneth Adams were sworn in earlier this month. They join returning commission members Helen Stone, Bobby Lockett, Pat Farrell and Dean Kicklighter.
One of the first items for the new commission was a bimonthly COVID-19 update from Coastal Health District Director Dr. Lawton Davis. Following the update, which largely surrounded the ongoing local vaccination efforts, Ellis said he has volunteered to receive the vaccine publicly to help combat the skepticism surrounding it and encouraged other commissioners to do the same.

Al Scott's political career marked by successes at local, state levels

Effective, humble, wise and perceptive. Those are just a few of the words friends and colleagues use to describe Al Scott. On Friday when the Chatham County Commission holds its first meeting of 2021, Scott won’t be at the helm as chairman for the first time in eight years.
Meeting his term limits for chairman, Scott took aim at Chatham County Tax Commission last year, but lost that bid to Sonya Jackson during the primary election in June. But no matter the position Scott has held over his more than 40 years in public service, his influence at both the state and local levels has been unmatched, according to those who know him.
