Last week, Alpena and Alpena Township released a joint statement saying the governing boards of both communities believe a water authority is the best option to end a years-long court battle over water and sewer rates and serve residents long-term.
The two sides have fought in court for eight years. The township buys water and sewer services from the city and balked over a proposed rate increase years ago, with officials then saying the city should treat the township as a wholesale customer.
The recent statement did not promise an imminent agreement, saying the governing boards want public comment they haven’t been able to get because of crowd restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, officials have continued behind-the-scenes dialogue and research, the statement said. ....

Wirgau gave public comment at the Alpena Township Board of Trustees meeting earlier in the day, and asked for the park to be closed.
ALPENA A small park in Alpena Township, that has fallen victim to vandalism and litter, has drawn the ire of residents that live near it and want it closed.
At the Alpena Township Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, several property owners who live near North Partridge Point Park explained during the public comment session that parties featuring drug use, speeding traffic, noise, and pollution impact the way they live. ....

Alpena Woman Charged with Home Invasion

An Alpena woman is facing several charges after Michigan State Police say she broke into the house she used to live in.
Troopers were called to a home in Alpena Township off of US-23 on March 15. The homeowner said he had recently purchased the house and had been renovating it.
When the homeowner arrived at the house on March 15, he found several tools missing and a broken back screen.
After an investigation, an arrest warrant was put out for Cheyenne Villeneuve from Alpena.
Villeneuve is charged with home invasion and malicious destruction of property.
Troopers say a man and a woman also helped Villeneuve break in to the home and have been charged with breaking and entering. ....

ALPENA The City of Alpena and Alpena Township released a joint update today on the ongoing effort to end litigation over water and sewer rates.
In December, the two municipalities revealed they were considering forming a water authority to oversee water operations in the city and township, but talks continued behind closed doors, until today’s update.
The letter says both sides agree that an authority is the best option, but before any final decision is made, much public input is needed, from residents of both communities. It states the COVID-19 pandemic has made it hard to do so because of the state’s indoor gathering limits. ....
