Concerned residents seek closure of North Partridge Point Park | News, Sports, Jobs

Partridge Point Road residents Al Wirgau, left, and Kathy McVeety walk their dogs on Tuesday. Residents in the area say a local park near where they live is causing issues with litter, speeding, and drug use. Wirgau gave public comment at the Alpena Township Board of Trustees meeting earlier in the day, and asked for the park to be closed.
ALPENA A small park in Alpena Township, that has fallen victim to vandalism and litter, has drawn the ire of residents that live near it and want it closed.
At the Alpena Township Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, several property owners who live near North Partridge Point Park explained during the public comment session that parties featuring drug use, speeding traffic, noise, and pollution impact the way they live. ....

South Bay President shows off some of the graffiti that is part of a vandalism problem at North Partridge Point Park in Alpena Township. Recently, the park has seen an uptick in littering, vandalism and broken glass on the ground. Police in Alpena have stepped up patrols in the park area.
ALPENA The South Bay group and its partners have invested time and money to make the North Partridge Point Park a place for people to enjoy.
But in the last year, it has been plagued by litter, vandalism and misuse.
Some of the vandals left their initials in spray paint and efforts are being made to find them. ....

ALPENA Some do it for fun, some do it for fresh air, and some do it to commune with nature. Whatever your pleasure, birding is a free hobby you can do all year long at any age, and even during a pandemic.
“It is the perfect pandemic hobby,” said Andrew Wolfgang, who has been birdwatching since he was 6 years old. Now 30, the Alpena High School biology teacher still enjoys birding.
“I really enjoy it and I’ve been doing it quite awhile,” Wolfgang said. “The thing I like about it is that you never know what you’re going to find, so each day is kind of like a treasure hunt. You don’t know what’s out there. It’s always relaxing, too, if you pick the right places.” ....

Alpena resident Chuck Herring gestures to the high waters of Thunder Bay that have shortened his Partridge Point yard over the past two years.
ALPENA Chuck Herring lost a chunk of his back yard when it slid into Thunder Bay, beaten by wind at waves near the tip of Partridge Point in Alpena Township.
He’s not planning an aggressive assault to stop the process after all, he said, “you can’t fight Mother Nature. You’re not going to win.”
His neighbors need to consider some erosion control, though, he said, eyeing a nearby home only yards from the cliff that’s been clawed and smashed by abnormally high waters for the past two years. ....
