Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 18) The Commission on Human Rights is being urged to look into the death of a detainee s barely month-old child, and probe the government s possible non-compliance with international rules on the treatment of imprisoned mothers.
Kapatid, a support group for families and friends of political prisoners, made the appeal to CHR on Thursday following the death of detainee Nona Espinosa s newborn child, Baby Carlen. Kapatid said the child died last Sunday of an infection in the lungs and blood after being hospitalized for a few days because of low hemoglobin count. ....

South Africans debate the death penalty amid rise in gender-based violence

Johannesburg - South African lawmakers have no appetite to restore the death penalty, despite growing calls globally for the reinstatement of capital punishment, as a crime deterrent.
According to joint Constitutional Review Committee Chairperson, Enock Mthethwa, this was not a straightforward matter, since no research had been conducted to prove that the death penalty was an effective deterrent that may curb crime rates.
Mthethwa made the comment during a virtual meeting of the Review Committee comprised in the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces, which annually reviews the Constitution. ....
