Rights bodies flag UN over Zim rights violations

GLOBAL and local human rights organisations have written to the United Nations to red-flag Zimbabwe for alleged continued persecution of human rights defenders.
The organisations that include Committee to Protect Journalists, Robert F Kennedy Human Rights, Southern African Human Rights Defenders Network and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights wrote to Mary Lawlor, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
In the letter, also sent to six other UN Special Rapporteurs, the rights defenders said Zimbabwe was under siege as citizens’ rights continue to be violated. ....

Chin'ono Wins Court Battle, But Not The War

Zimbabwe journalist and documentary filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono was vindicated by a court ruling this week, but he has two further cases hanging over his head.
After the court ruling by High Court Justice Jester Charewa on 28 April that quashed criminal proceedings against him, the acclaimed journalist appeared resolute and immediately took the fight back to the State by suing them for “wrongful arrest, detention and malicious prosecution”.
Chin’ono, a critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule, was being prosecuted on charges of “publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State as defined in section 31(a)(iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act”, after claiming that he had tweeted that a child had been beaten to death by a police officer while on her mother’s back at a taxi rank. ....

Zimbabwe: Authorities must drop malicious charges against opposition leaders and journalist

Zimbabwean authorities must immediately and unconditionally release opposition leaders and a journalist and drop the malicious charges against them, Amnesty International said today as one of the three appeared in court for bail application.
The latest arrests of Hopewell Chin’ono, Job Sikhala and Fadzayi Mahere are part of a growing crackdown on opposition leaders, human rights defenders, activists, journalists and other critical voices
