In the last two years, the world has watched the African nation of Sudan begin its journey towards democracy. Yet transitioning from authoritarian rule to democracy inevitably has had its difficulties with many in the country, especially women s activists, fearing that progress is far too slow. In April 2019, Alaa Salah gained internet fame after images of her leading protest chants against then-President Omar al-Bashir went viral. The young architectural-engineering student was dubbed The Nubian Queen  at the time.

A no-nonsense hero, 30-year-old Rami Ahmed lifts his T-shirt to show the long, jagged wound left on his chest by the bayonet of a Kalashnikov. It looks like a snake tattoo. Along with millions of Sudanese, Rami participated in protests in Khartoum in early April 2019 against President Omar al-Bashir, who ruled the country dictatorially for thirty years, clearly favoring the Islamists. The military struck back brutally. Rami escaped with two clean shots through the leg and a chest wound. What he says has the substance of a complaint, but not the tone. «Compared to the others, I m doing fine.» ....

The events unfolding these days in Sudan are a stark reminder to all of us that change can happen with simple tools, thanks to ordinary people who are willing to dedicate everything they have to fight for their country. Young Sudanese men and women managed to completely transform their country’s political system and bring an end to 30 years of misery under former President Omar al-Bashir. While the popular protests in Iraq were hijacked by opportunists, those in Sudan managed to galvanize the masses and bring about real social change. One of the most beautiful and iconic scenes emerging from Sudan’s demonstrations was that of Alaa Salah, who was depicted standing on top of a car while speaking to a crowd of female protesters gathered around her. Women constituted the overwhelming majority of participants in these demonstrations. They ultimately led to an agreement with the governm ....
