University President Thomas LeBlanc lost the confidence of many faculty, staff and students during his tenure, but one group has remained steadfast in its public support for the embattled president: the Board of Trustees.
Trustees, many of whom voted to hire LeBlanc for the job in 2017, have repeatedly commended the president’s leadership during his time at GW through various statements and at Board meetings. The Board doubled down on their support through their message to the GW community after LeBlanc’s departure announcement, lauding his efforts to lead the University out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Globe Theatre launches project to rid Shakespeare's plays of 'racialised dynamics'

The Globe Theatre has launched a project to 'decolonise' Shakespeare's famous plays, while experts claimed his work is 'problematic' for linking whiteness to beauty.
The London theatre, which is a reconstruction of the Elizabethan playhouse where William Shakespeare wrote his work, has begun 'anti-racist' seminars to discuss 'decolonising' Shakespeare's esteemed plays.
Experts claimed that the bard's plays are 'problematic' for linking whiteness to beauty, while an academic said all of Shakespeare's plays are 'race plays' as they all contain 'whiteness'.
During the first seminar, academics debated A Midsummer Night's Dream and said it included 'problematic gendered and racialised dynamics', the Telegraph reported.

Experts say the results from a recent faculty survey of top administrators could affect University President Thomas LeBlanc’s future at GW.
Officials released the survey’s quantitative results in February before releasing the qualitative results earlier this month, both of which found that a majority of full-time faculty lack confidence in LeBlanc. Some experts in higher education administration said the findings are not enough for the Board of Trustees to ask LeBlanc to leave, while others said faculty’s initial approval of the survey itself indicates a lack of trust in his leadership abilities, which could be enough for the Board to remove him.

When the American Library Association released its list of the 10 most frequently banned or challenged books of 2020, it was no surprise to Angie Thomas that her debut novel, “The Hate U Give,” had made its return to the list for a third appearance.

'Woke' teachers have cut Shakespeare because his work is about 'white supremacy and colonization'

A growing number of 'woke' academics are refusing to teach Shakespeare in U.S. schools, arguing that the Bard promotes racism, white supremacy and intolerance, and instead are pushing for the teaching of 'modern' alternatives.
Writing in the January issue of School Library Journal, Amanda MacGregor, a Minnesota-based librarian, bookseller and freelance journalist, asked why teachers were continuing to include Shakespeare in their classrooms.
'Shakespeare's works are full of problematic, outdated ideas, with plenty of misogyny, racism, homophobia, classism, anti-Semitism and misogynoir,' she wrote, with the last word referring to a hatred of black women.
But others contended the latest woke trend is short-sighted, not taking into account the lessons that Shakespeare still can teach for today - with one New York Times best-selling author accusing schools that jettison the writer as 'flushing great literature down the drain.'

Teachers Refusing to Have Students Learn 'Racist' Shakespeare

The teachers told SLJ that Shakespeare’s classic works promote “misogyny, racism, homophobia, classism, anti-Semitism, and misogynoir” and are thus replacing his spot in the curricula to “make room for modern, diverse, and inclusive voices.”

Amanda Gorman's poetry shows why spoken word belongs in school

This article was originally published on The Conversation.
Editor's note: Not long after Amanda Gorman recited one of her poems at the inauguration of President Joe Biden on Jan. 20, three of her forthcoming books skyrocketed to three of the top four spots on Amazon. She was also selected to recite an original poem at Super Bowl LV. Here, three scholars of poetry explain why the writings of the 22-year-old Gorman – who became the country's national youth poet laureate at age 17 – and her rise to fame represent a prime opportunity for educators to use spoken word poetry as a lively way to engage students.
