Political Solidarity Is A Solution to Attacks Against Asian Americans
Julie Ae Kim was saddened and frightened by reports on the rise of violence against Asian Americans during the pandemic. She looked to the histories of political solidarity for answers.

This past spring, I was in lockdown in my tiny studio along with the rest of New York City. It was ominous. I would hear sirens multiple times a day, the red lights blinking through my sheer curtain. The Laundromats were closed, so my dirty clothes were piling up, the entire city narrowing to just my immediate block: bodega, supermarket, the park, liquor store. In April, I heard about an acid attack on a young Asian-American in Brooklyn while she was taking out the garbage, then in July, about an 89-year-old Asian woman who was set on fire and didn’t tell her family what happened right away because she didn’t want them to worry. Attacks against Asian Americans are still surging. These women are speaking out.


“There’s been a long history of racism toward Asian Americans this certainly didn’t start during the pandemic. But the recent anti-Asian rhetoric opened the door to more people acting on their racism. It was upsetting to many of us that it was so difficult to get others outside of our own circles to care,” she said. “We’re the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. we’re your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers yet we still feel invisible at times.”
For many, the escalation in verbal and physical attacks is reminiscent of the way Muslims, Arab Americans and South Asian Americans, or anyone who was identified as such correctly or not were treated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. ....
