CANBERA (dpa-AFX) - Asian stocks turned in a mixed performance on Monday as investors digested a slew of economic data from China and kept a wary eye on the COVID-19 surge across much of Asia.
Traders also eyed the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee s latest meeting, due out Wednesday, for further clues to officials views on the recovery.
China s industrial output rose 9.8 percent year-on-year in April, matching expectations, while retail sales increased 17.7 percent, falling short of estimates of 24.9 percent, separate reports released earlier in the day showed. Fixed asset investment spiked an annual 19.9 percent, beating forecasts. ....

A pregnant Asian woman says she was spit on by a stranger in what she believes was a racially motivated attack.
The woman and her husband were sitting in their car at a red light near Broadway and 14th Street in downtown Oakland, California, this past Friday when they were approached by a stranger who then spat in the woman s face through the vehicle s window.
The incident was caught on dashcam video, in which you can hear a man spitting on the woman in the passenger seat. The video also shows the woman, Tina, telling her husband not to get out of the car after the attack. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Xinhua) The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Sunday confirmed the withdrawal of the Democratic People s Republic of Korea (DPRK) from the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
In a brief statement, AFC said the matter will be referred to the organizing committee for FIFA competitions, and that further details on the standings of Asian qualifying Group H, which includes the DPRK, will be announced in due course.
Prior to their withdrawal, the DPRK ranked fourth in Group H after five matches, just one point behind group leaders Turkmenistan. The group also includes South Korea, Lebanon and Sri Lanka. The group s remaining matches will be played in South Korea in a centralized manner in June. ....
