Rise in anti-Asian hate crimes across US sparks awareness at JMU


The night before her first class at JMU in fall 2018, communication studies major Thu Nguyen had arrived in the U.S. after a 26-hour flight from Vietnam. As an international student, she said, she was excited about America’s diverse culture and the opportunity to study at JMU.
In a classroom surrounded by over 200 students, Nguyen turned to the girl sitting next to her and asked what their next task was. She had never been in a class that big before and said she was confused about splitting into groups.
“[The girl] was like, ‘Why are you shy?’” Nguyen said. “‘This is a free country — just do whatever you want.’ And I was like, so shocked. And then, she just left me.” ....

Sustainability Month shines light on SDGs

Sure, there are 30 days in April, but 17 is the magic number for Sustainability Month at UB, which starts today.
That’s the number of Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, which form the basis of the United Nations’ interconnected strategy to build a better world by 2030. UB has placed greater emphasis on the SDGs in recent years, weaving them into all aspects of the university, from academics to operations.
The SDGs will be firmly in focus as part of Sustainability Month: A different goal will be featured each day in April, with various events that correlate to that SDG. And UB Sustainability’s website has been updated with a curated collection of content including podcasts, volunteer opportunities and further readings on each of the 17 SDGs. ....

DIXON, ILLINOIS Dave Hellmich, Ph.D., a 1977 graduate of Greensburg Community High School and the son of Richard and Phyllis Hellmich of Greensburg, was recently honored twice in the Sauk Valley Telegraph, the local news source for Dr. Hellmichs town of residence.
As the Sauk Valley Community College President, Hellmich was named the 2020 Citizen of the Year for promoting engagement and his continued service to the community. ....
