The passing of former EKU Interim President Dr. Eugene Hughes


Eastern Kentucky University President David McFaddin alerted students and faculty on March 17 of the passing of former interim president Dr. Eugene M. Hughes. 
Hughes earned degrees in mathematics, including a Bachelor of Science from Chadron State College in Nebraska, a Master of Science from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. While at Chadron, he became a National Science Foundation fellow.
 Hughes came out of retirement after 42 years in higher education to become Eastern Kentucky Univeristy’s interim president from July to September 2001 until a permanent president was found. 
According to McFaddin, Hughes brought to EKU not only a fresh face with new ideas but also an impressive resume. He was president of Northern Arizona University (1979-1993) and Wichita State University (1993-1999) before retiring as president emeritus, both of which faced the same kind of budget cutbacks that Eastern was fac ....

Colleges and universities across the state are betting on a more complete return to in-person learning this fall, but it’s not clear if those plans will come to fruition at this stage of the pandemic.
The University of Illinois System — with campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield — announced Tuesday that it anticipates the majority of classes and labs to be held face to face next school year.

The Ohio State University announced today that it plans to host a modified in-person spring commencement for graduates in what will be the first non-virtual commencement since late 2019.
“We are partnering with state and local health officials on a plan to provide our students and their families with the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments safely in person,” said Ohio State President Kristina M. Johnson.
While the university is working to maintain many of Ohio State’s proud traditions, health and safety guidelines mean that certain elements will need to change. The university will make adjustments to provide a memorable celebration at Ohio Stadium that is safe and healthy, including no more than 13,500 attendees in each of two commencement ceremonies to allow for physical ....
