Three recognized for mentoring graduate students - UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff

Laina Bay-Cheng, Myung Mi Kim and Jinhui Xu are the recipients of the 2020-21 Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring Award, given out by the Graduate School to recognize UB faculty for their support and development of graduate students through their mentoring activities.
The award, established in 2012, goes annually to members of the graduate faculty who have demonstrated “truly outstanding and sustained support and development of graduate students from course completion through research and subsequent career placement.”
Bay-Cheng, professor and associate dean in the School of Social Work, was nominated by Nancy J. Smyth, professor and dean of the School of Social Work. Kim, James H. McNulty Chair and Professor of English, was nominated for the award by her department chair, Rachel Ablow, professor of English. Xu, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was nominated by his department chair, SUNY Distinguished Professor Chunming Qiao. ....

“Love warriors” must step forward and fight systemic racism in society, Harvard University professor, bestselling author and political activist Cornel West recently told a UB audience.
West was speaking via Zoom at “Beyond the Knife,” the first public event of the Department of Surgery’s anti-racism and health care equity initiative.
In his opening remarks at the event on Feb. 18, West said it was fairly clear that we are living in a moment of increasing spiritual decay and escalating moral decrepitude.
“What we need more than anything else is the best the Black Freedom Movement has to offer, and that has always been an attempt to look chronic, systemic hatred in the face and still muster the courage to love, to love truth, to love beauty, to love greatness,” he said. ....

BGSU celebrates history-making Changing Lives for the World fundraising campaign

Bowling Green State University successfully concluded the largest comprehensive fundraising endeavor in its history raising more than a quarter of a billion dollars in philanthropic support during the Changing Lives for the World Campaign.
The University announced the $255 million campaign total during a livestream event Thursday morning.
“This momentous fundraising effort achieved new and historic levels of success for BGSU, surpassing the $200 million goal set in July 2014,” said BGSU Board of Trustees Chair Betty Montgomery. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we deeply appreciate the generous donors whose contributions have positioned the University to continue its history of excellence, access and affordability, ensuring that Bowling Green State University can continue its commitment to be a public university for the public good.” ....
