Fewer animal parasite and more pneumonia deaths in late 2020

SHARING OPTIONS:
Salmonella detections in aborted cattle foetuses increased in Q4 2020, breaking a trend of decreasing incidence of the agent for the past decade. \ Philip Doyle
The quarterly report released by the regional veterinary laboratories (RVLs) gives an overview of animal disease trends over October, November and December of 2020.
An overall increase in the number of carcases submitted for examination can be attributed to a rise in avian carcasses examined over the period.
Cattle
The substantial increase in the number of cattle foetuses submitted for examination was partly accounted for in a department bovine abortion study, which encouraged veterinarians to send foetuses to the RVLs.

Grass+: correcting grass quality without running short

The average growth rate for the last week was 80kg DM/ha. The forecast for the weekend is for temperatures in the low to mid-twenties with rain in some areas.
The mix of warm and wet weather is expected to see growth rates in most counties to continue on an upward trend.
The dry weather has been a great opportunity to get silage done on a lot of farms.
Wet weather in May meant many had to delay cutting for a number of weeks which meant crops were heavy but this will have had an effect on quality.

As spring arrived on the grassland last month, herdsman Khongorbaatar's first task of the day after waking around 6 am was to check his 160 newly born calves and his family meadows.
Khongorbaatar, from Jaruug Banner, Tongliao, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, said that thanks to new centralized cattle-raising methods designed to restore grassland, the number of calves born each year keeps increasing, earning him about 2 million yuan ($312,000).

The Grass Week: trusting the figures

SHARING OPTIONS:
Getting paddocks with surplus grass cut as soon as possible and back into the rotation is very important
This week, we saw a big jump in grass growth across the country.
For many, this has led to pre-grazing covers getting ahead of target.
The average pre-grazing cover for farms on PastureBase was 1,649kg DM/ha.
Regardless of how good the quality is, once pre-grazing covers have gone over 1,500kg DM/ha, graze-outs will suffer.
Strong paddocks
Up to now, wet conditions had made it very difficult to cut paddocks that had gone strong, which means there are now a lot of strong paddocks with surplus grass ready to cut.
