How X-Troop helped to defeat the Third Reich – The Forward

Lieutenant George Lane is in big trouble. His waterlogged Sten gun has jammed, and bullets from German rifles and MP40s are flying all around him. He is hiding in the surf next to beach obstacles made of thin iron girders. The Nazis are shooting blindly into the darkness while Lane and Captain Roy Wooldridge, an expert in mines, desperately seek cover. It’s May 17, 1944, Ault, northern France, two hours after midnight, three weeks before D-Day.
Something has spooked the Germans, and Lane doesn’t know whether they have been discovered and the mission compromised, or the bored guards are now simply letting off steam. He does know that if they are taken prisoner, it will mean almost certain death. Adolf Hitler’s 1942 ....

Obituary: Major-General Jeremy Phipps, SAS officer who helped plan rescue of Iranian embassy hostages

Died: March 16, 2021.
IT was the moment, Charles Moore recollects in the first volume of his biography of Margaret Thatcher, when the SAS, previously relatively little known, became a household word for heroism.
On May 5, 1980, teams from 22 SAS stormed the Iranian embassy in Princes Gate, in South Kensington, London, dramatically ending a siege that had begun on April 30 when six heavily-armed terrorists had taken 26 people hostage.
The gunmen had demanded the release of 91 Arabs imprisoned in Khuzestan, a region in southern Iran for whose independence they claimed to be fighting. They threatened to blow up the embassy if their demands were not met by noon the following day. Police closed off the area and took over neighbouring buildings. ....

Antonia Fraser: 'I had privileges – and not the ones you think'

Like so many of us, Lady Antonia Fraser – “Please, just Antonia” – has spent most of the past year at home. Today, the sitting room of the house in Holland Park where she has lived for “62 and a half” years, is bathed in sunlight, streaming in through the French windows, but there is a hint of perturbation in the air.
Last night, as she was watching television, the bulb in the lamp next to the sofa exploded, showering glass everywhere. An electrician has been summoned. Happily, the television remained on.
“Do I have Netflix?” She feigns astonishment at my question. “Is the Pope a Catholic?” The delights of Netflix – or “Lady Nettie” as she calls it – are something the family talks about all the time. She is particularly fond of Shtisel, a subtitled Israeli soap opera set in a Hassidic community in Jerusalem. “Akive,” she sighs, recalling the good-looking, perma ....

Outlander Real History: The True Stories That Inspired The Drama

Published:
The hit TV show
Outlander follows its characters from the battlefields of the Second World War to the Jacobite risings of the 18th-century and colonial North Carolina on the eve of the American Revolution. Based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, the drama uses a time-slip narrative – in which its protagonist Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) moves initially between the 1940s and the 1740s – to play fast and loose with history. But far from inaccurate, the show is deeply interested in the ways we experience and imagine the past. Merging elements of fact and fantasy, it explores many ‘what ifs’ of Scottish history by touching on key events and featuring recognisable historical figures. ....

Hubert Faure, French commando who landed in Normandy, dies at 106

By PHIL DAVISON | Special To The Washington Post | Published: April 20, 2021
Hubert Faure, who died April 17 at 106, was one of the last two survivors of a 177-man French commando unit that landed alongside British forces under withering German machine-gun, mortar and shellfire on Sword Beach, Normandy, on June 6, 1944.
With the rank of chief warrant officer, Faure was part of the 1st Battalion Marine Commando Fusiliers known as Kieffer commandos after its leader, Lt. Philippe Kieffer. It was the only French unit to take part in the D-Day landings, although the domestic French resistance had been harassing the Germans with guerrilla tactics throughout the war. ....
