Sustainable Summer Film Series continues Friday with screening of MOTHERLOAD

MOTHERLOAD, a crowdsourced documentary, will be screened Friday night as a part of Keep San Marcos Beautiful and Sustainable San Marcos’ Sustainable Summer Film Series.
The documentary showcases a mother’s quest to understand and promote the cargo bicycle in a gas-powered, digital world. Beginning at 7 p.m., Move SM and Texas State Stelos Scholars Program will be at Friday’s screening where they’ll have interactive booths related to sustainable transportation.
The film will begin at 8:30 p.m. at San Marcos Plaza Park 401 E. Hopkins St.
“This event is an exciting opportunity for the university’s brightest students to collaborate in a meaningful way with the city, community organizations, and the broader public,” Associate Dean of the Texas State Honors College Peter Tschirhart said. ....

COOKING FOR COMMUNITY: San Marcos restaurants respond to winter crisis

With treacherous road conditions, rolling blackouts and busted pipes that led to long periods with limited or no water, many San Marcos families found themselves without access to groceries or the ability to cook their food. As temperatures plummeted and the power grid failed, several local restaurants stepped up to fill the gap for thousands of residents who suddenly found themselves in need.
As the winter weather crisis dragged from hours into days, people began to flood local Facebook groups with requests in search of essentials: water, eggs, bread and milk. In one, a Texas State student implored, “Where can a hungry college kid get some food?” ....

Hays County proclaims February as Black History Month

The Hays County Commissioners Court recently proclaimed February as Black History Month in Hays County and many municipalities will follow suit in their upcoming city council meetings.
“This is the first time there has been a collaborative effort of the whole county to work together and put together this schedule of activities,” said Vanessa Westbrook, chair of the African American Heritage Committee of the Hays County Historical Commission. “Some of the activities have been going on for years. Some are new. The old and the new have met together to provide the citizens of Hays County with a great opportunity for discovery, exploration and learning about significant African Americans in Hays County. ....
