As many as 2,786 panchayats in Andhra Pradesh are set to go for polls in the second phase on Saturday. The panchayat polls began from February 9 and would go on till February 21 in four phases, a press release from the Panchayat Raj Department said on Friday.
The first phase was held on February 9. Elections would be held to elect 20,817 ward members, the release said. Polling would begin from 6.30 AM and go on till 3.30 PM while counting of votes would begin at 4 PM.
Though the elections were to be held for 3,328 Panchayat sarpanchs, 539 have been unanimously elected while no nomination was filed for three villages, it said. ....

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Andhra Pradesh government on a contempt petition filed by Odisha for notifying panchayat elections in disputed inter-State border villages despite a status quo order from the top court.
A Bench led by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar gave Andhra a week to file its response to the contempt plea but did not stay the polls for now.
“Whatever consequences flowing from our orders will follow,” Justice Khanwilkar remarked. ....

The first phase of the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat elections recorded 81.42 per cent voter turnout, the State Election Commission said on Tuesday. The polling held for 2,723 panchayats in Andhra Pradesh ended peacefully on February 9th.
The SEC in its statement said that, The State Election Commission expresses its satisfaction on completion of Phase-I elections to Gram Panchayats in the State. The polling started at 6:30 am and ended by 3:30 PM, while the counting of votes started at 4 PM. Krishna district has recorded 85.6 per cent voter turnout and it was the highest. Polling was also conducted to elect 20,157 ward members. ....

In Paruchuru, the constituency of Eluri Sambasiva Rao, the YSRCP secured as many as 75 out of 95 panchayats while the TDP was limited to 20.

A mind-boggling number which is indicative of the success of the welfare initiatives launched by the present Government is YSRCP candidates winning a whopping 81.1 % (2637) of panchayats in phase 1 while the Telugu Desam Party crawled its way to an abysmal 15% (508). A total of 98 were won by others. The number is expected to increase as the results of 6 panchayats are still awaited. 
The Telugu Desam Party faces unfathomable humiliation due to the party’s dismal performance in its age-old bastions.
