A promising sign in the fight against gun violence

Within the last week, four people, including a 9-year-old boy, were gunned down at a business complex in Orange, Calif. This was the third mass shooting in the United States in a span of several weeks.
These killings come as the nation was mourning the killing of 18 others in mass shootings in Colorado and Georgia. Eight people, including six women of Asian descent, were killed in three Atlanta-area spas. A week later, 10 people died when a gunman opened fire at a Boulder, Colo., grocery store.
In the wake of the violence, politicians provided their, all too familiar, “stop the needless violence” speeches, and then began to posture to protect their political interests. ....

Premature or precautionary? California is first to tackle microplastics in drinking water

RACHEL BECKER
CalMatters
California is poised to issue the world’s first guidelines for microplastics in drinking water despite no data on how plentiful they are in the state, no scientific agreement on how to test water for them and little research on their health risks.
The pieces of plastic — smaller than an ant, some so tiny they can be seen only with a microscope — have contaminated wildlife and human bodies through their food, air and water.
Under a 2018 state law, California must require four years of testing for microplastics in drinking water, and the state must consider guidelines to help water providers and consumers determine what levels may be safe to drink. ....

The key to the survival of Australia’s globally iconic koala species may be found in its faeces, a Central Queensland scientist has found.
The critical revelation could determine how long future generations can see the magnificent marsupials in the wild, after a World Wildlife Fund commissioned report announced more than 60,000 koalas were impacted by the devastating 2019-2020 bushfires.
Central Queensland University koala researcher Dr Flavia Santamaria has spent the past year prying through piles of poo to determine the mammals stress levels.
Just like how humans became more vulnerable to diseases and illnesses when stressed, Dr Santamaria said so did koalas. ....
