Dangers in giving magnesium sulfate intravenously to horses highlighted in study
Intravenous administration of magnesium sulfate to horses to provide a competitive edge is a nefarious and dangerous practice, say researchers.
Magnesium is an essential macroelement involved in many physiological processes.
In equine medicine, intravenous magnesium sulfate is used to treat heart rhythm irregularities, neurological disorders, low magnesium levels in the blood that might arise during critical illness, and for low levels of calcium in the blood which are not responding to other treatments.
However, more recently, intravenous magnesium has been used in equine events as a calming and performance-enhancing agent, with the ultimate goal of giving a competitive edge to horses that receive it. It is a practice forbidden at FEI events under the international governing body’s anti-doping rules because of its calming and metabolic effects. ....

Did a new coronavirus go from dog to human?

Researchers have discovered a new coronavirus, in a child with pneumonia in Malaysia in 2018, that appears to have jumped from dog to human.
If confirmed as a pathogen, the novel canine-like coronavirus could represent the eighth unique coronavirus known to cause disease in humans.
“How common this virus is, and whether it can be transmitted efficiently from dogs to humans or between humans, nobody knows,” says Gregory Gray, a professor of medicine, global health, and environmental health at the Duke University and lead author of the paper in
“What’s more important is that these coronaviruses are likely spilling over to humans from animals much more frequently than we know. We are missing them because most hospital diagnostic tests only pick up known human coronaviruses.” ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio Turns out a daily dose of omega-3 supplements may help slow the effects of aging by suppressing damage and boosting protection at the cellular level during and after a stressful event.
Researchers at Ohio State University found that daily supplements containing 2.5 grams of omega-3, the highest dose tested, were best at helping the body resist the damaging effects of stress.
Compared to the placebo group, participants who took omega-3 produced less cortisol, a stress hormone, and lower levels of a pro-inflammatory protein during a stressful event. ....
