From slow disposal to indiscriminate filing and low cost of registering patents, experts and researchers point to a variety of reasons for this trend.
NEW DELHI: Indian researchers, scientists and innovators appear to have more success in obtaining patents when they file applications in another country. Analysis of data for 10 years shows that on average, four of every 10 applications made by Indians abroad fetch a patent, while it is one-in-10 in India.
From slow disposal to indiscriminate filing and cost of registering patents, experts and researchers point to a variety of reasons for this trend. According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Indians filed 1.2 lakh applications in the country between 2010 and 2019 and 13,670 were granted patents. Comparatively, 44,477 of the 1.07 lakh applications filed by Indians abroad were granted. ....

E-cigarette use was associated with higher likelihood of short-term, but not long-term quitting. 
Overall, 2.71% of adults, translating to 1.09 million people, used e-cigarettes daily or occasionally during 2018, they said. A majority of e-cigarette users (97.5%) were concurrently regularly smoking cigarettes.
The researchers say implementing excise taxes on e-cigarettes at 75% of the cigarette excise tax rate could generate annual revenue of up to R2.2bn.
The studies were conducted by the Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research (ATIM) at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), the University of Pretoria and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).

Researchers from Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi, and Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad, have found that N440K has a high prevalence of over 33% in Andhra Pradesh.
A 44-year-old public service employee was diagnosed positive for Covid-19 on July 25, 2020. He tested negative on August 2, 2020. However, he tested positive again on September 10, 2020, during routine surveillance. He showed symptoms like fever, cough, and malaise.
The research team comprising Pallavali Roja Rani, Mohammed Imran, Juturu Vijaya Lakshmi, Bani Jolly, Abhinav Jain, Avileli Surekha, Vigneshwar Senthivel, Pulala Chandrasekhar, Mohit Kumar Divakar, Damam Srinivasulu, Rahul C Bhoyar, PR Vanaja, Vinod Scaria, and Sridhar Sivasubbu found 15 and 17 genetic variants in the genomes from the two episodes of infection in the public service employee, respectively. Of them 14 variants were common between the two episodes. ....
