The Morrison Government continues to make it easier for Australians to eat well and reduce the risk of chronic health conditions linked to diets high in saturated fats, sodium and sugars.
Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, Richard Colbeck said the Government was working with food companies to reformulate products and improve the nutritional value of many common foods.
“The Healthy Food Partnership Reformulation Program is about improving overall population health and wellbeing,” Minister Colbeck said.
“The reformulation of food products helps all Australians to eat well and not unknowingly overdo the intake of salt, sugars and saturated fats, which can increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer and type 2 diabetes.” ....

Salt reformulation in Australia: Bread, cheese and processed meat identified as key targets for reduction
Australian researchers have identified bread, cheese and processed meat products as key dietary contributors of salt requiring sodium reformulation in a new study, urging the government to widen its focus on reformulating these foods to achieve positive public health impacts.
The study was conducted by the George Institute of Global Health, which used modelling analysis to model the potential reductions to Australian household sodium purchases after implementation of the government’s sodium reformulation programme. Nielsen data from 7,188 local households was used for the analysis.
This voluntary sodium reformulation programme is dubbed the Healthy Food Partnership. It is being implemented by the Australian Department of Health (DOH), and aims to ....

Government targets designed to lower the salt content of packaged foods will make little difference to the health of Australians, according to a new analysis published today.
George Institute researchers found that even if the voluntary targets were fully implemented, they would reduce the amount currently purchased by Australian households in the form of packaged foods by just 3.5 percent.
Lead author and Accredited Practising Dietitian from The George Institute Daisy Coyle said that high intakes of sodium, in the form of salt, were a key contributor to high blood pressure – a major cause of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. ....
