Broward Schools Will Begin On-Campus COVID-19 Vaccinations Tuesday


A similar effort in Orange County last week resulted in about 1,500 students and family members receiving their coronavirus shots.
Broward County students 16 and older will soon have the opportunity to get vaccinated for the coronavirus without leaving campus beginning Tuesday.

The Broward County School District will begin offering the vaccine at six schools, with all of the county schools visited over an eight-day span through May 13.
All students 16 and older are eligible to receive the vaccine, which will be administered by staff members from the state Department of Health in Broward County. They ll return in three weeks for the second dose. ....

New virus strains cause worry among Orange County officials, but vaccine inventory may increase

Rising numbers of more contagious and more aggressive coronavirus variants in Central Florida and throughout the U.S. have prompted a national push for increased surveillance of new infections by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as vaccinations ramp up in Central Florida where shots are now available for anyone 16 and older. “We always ask [about variants], ‘Should we be concerned?’ I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t concerned,” said Alvina Chu, epidemiology program manager for the state Health Department in Orange County. “But concern isn’t panic." Speaking to reporters Monday at a press briefing on the pandemic, Chu said viruses constantly change through mutation and variants were expected. But she added, “There have been studies to show that [one strain] can be up to 50% more transmissible and also potentially pose increased severity of illness.” ....
