Pine Creek senior receives scholarship from international women's nonprofit


Ask around about Lindsay Baker, and the word you’ll hear most often is “focused.”
“She is really focused and hardworking,” said Rita Baker, Lindsay’s mother. “She gives everything her all. It’s just amazing.”
“She is a very impressive, talented and focused young lady,” said Candace Gordon, president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. “She knows where she wants to go and what she needs to do to get there.”
Baker’s sense of focus is one of the qualities that impressed the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization dedicated to expanding women’s opportunities through education. The nonprofit recently awarded the Pine Creek High School senior with a $2,500 college scholarship, according to a recent news release. ....

Fayetteville student set to earn two diplomas in one academic year


By May, Nia Raines will have earned two.
The 18-year-old will soon graduate from Cumberland Polytechnic High School. She already has one degree under her belt in December she completed work for her associate’s degree from Fayetteville Technical Community College. Graduation ceremonies for both schools are scheduled for next month.
Nia’s high school is located on the FTCC campus, and students there earn credits toward college. But she went the extra mile, taking summer courses, to earn her degree in a two-year program. She was just 17 at the time.
“I took a lot of summer classes to help me with that, to get me on the fast track,” says Nia, who has maintained a 3.8 GPA in high school. “It just accumulated. I worked very hard.”  ....

Deming High School SkillsUSA Chapter earns elite national recognition


DEMING – Wildcat Pride is shining on the Deming High School SkillsUSA Chapter. The chapter was recently recognized nationally as the recipient of the Models of Excellence Award. Only 24 chapters nationwide were recognized for the award as an Outstanding Chapter by the national SkillsUSA organization in Leesburg, VA. DHS SkillsUSA is the lone New Mexico chapter among the 24 selected. 
The annual program recognizes the exceptional integration of personal, workplace and technical skills into SkillsUSA chapter activities. This is the highest honor bestowed on chapters by SkillsUSA, which is among the largest student organizations for career and technical education.
SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of education and industry founded in 1965 to strengthen our nation’s skilled workforce. Buckeye Career Center announces Students of the Month

Buckeye Career Center has announced Kody Ames and Autumn Brown as its January Students of the Month and Samantha Nicely as its Adult Student on the Month. 
Ames, of New Philadelphia, is a meat cutting, deli and bakery student. He is a two-year member of Drug Free Clubs of America at BCC. He plans to continue his education next year at BCC. He is the son of Joyce Ames.
Brown, a student at Conotton Valley High School, is a level two senior in exercise science and sports medicine and a level one senior in auto technology. Brown is a two-year member of DFCA and Health Occupation Students of America. She made it to the state HOSA conference last year in human growth and development. She has played volleyball for eight years and is a six year band member at CVHS. She works for Kathy’s Catering. Brown plans to attend Bowling Green State University and obtain a master’s degree in athletic training. She is the daughter of Todd and Julie Herman. ....

PTC nursing students serenade with carols


Pontotoc Technology Center practical nursing students serenaded Irving Community Center drive-through lunch recipients with Christmas carols Wednesday.
Our student organization is Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), Julie Williams, practical nursing instructor, said. These students are practical nursing students. We have come today to sing some carols for the folks her are coming to pick up their meals. Since we can t go in in person, we re just doing it outside.
Despite bone-chilling cold, the group seemed to have a terrific time.
We have 20 students here today, Williams added. We re just going around town to the nursing facilities and the senior citizens center to spread some Christmas cheer. ....
