Senate overrides Hutchinson's veto on gun bill


LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The Arkansas Senate on Monday voted to override Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s veto of a bill prohibiting local police from enforcing federal gun restrictions, moving closer to enacting the measure despite objections that it would jeopardize public safety.
The majority-Republican Senate voted 21-12 in favor of overriding Hutchinson’s veto of the legislation, which would impose criminal penalties on state and local police for assisting federal authorities in enforcing gun restrictions sponsors say violate the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The override attempt next moves to the House, where it needs a simple majority to pass. ....

Most Arkansas newspapers didn't talk to trans people in coverage of anti-trans laws


Arkansas recently passed three discriminatory laws targeting transgender people, particularly trans youth, including measures denying them health care and banning them from sports. Local print coverage of these laws was often lacking, as journalists rarely talked to trans people they impact and largely failed to push back against bigotry and anti-trans misinformation.
A Media Matters review of local media from February 2 when the first legislation was introduced through April 7  the day after the third law was passed found that Arkansas newspapers printed 32 articles on one or more of these laws and only 12, about 38%, included the perspective of a trans or nonbinary person. About 56% of the articles came from one paper, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.  ....

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) - A bill that seeks to meet basic standards for tenants passed the Arkansas Senate on Tuesday.
“What it does is create residential quality standards, that is something we’ve never had on the books and it’s something we’ve let contracts dictate,” Dismang told 40/29 News.
This bill would require landlords to ensure their properties have such things as running hot and cold water, electricity, a correctly working sewer system, and other things. ....
