GAVIN ESLER, Wake up England! Why is Nicola Sturgeon being allowed to dominate the debate?

Arthur Greenwood is not much remembered these days, but in September 1939 he performed a great service to his country.
As Nazi troops poured into Poland, blowing apart Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s policy of appeasing Hitler, Arthur – the deputy leader of the Labour Party – stood up to speak in the House of Commons.
From the Opposition benches, the Conservative MP Leo Amery yelled: ‘Speak for England, Arthur!’ And he did, demanding Hitler be stopped.
But Arthur Greenwood didn’t just speak for England. The Yorkshireman spoke for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the entire United Kingdom.
Inevitably, Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has been forced to confront a blizzard of questions about the road to independence. But that’s only half the unfolding story ....

MAY 14 ― It has been said that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is Malaysia’s first wartime prime minister since independence.
If that is so, then he needs a war Cabinet. According to Collins Dictionary, a war Cabinet is a committee formed by a government in a time of war.
Muhyiddin’s current Cabinet has 32 ministers, including himself. 38 deputy ministers add to the total number of 70. It was constituted before the war ― a peacetime Cabinet.
But the country is now at war. If Muhyiddin’s peacetime Cabinet is his wartime Cabinet as well, then it is not an efficient way to execute war efforts. ....

Appeasement of the CCP?

Appeasement of the CCP?
Commentary
In crucial times, we would be fortunate indeed if the leaders of the free world were as courageous, as principled, and as great communicators as Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher.
But such leaders are, unfortunately, rare.
Ordinary leaders have in the past resorted to appeasement, that is, being too ready to make significant and unnecessary concessions to the enemy.
We are living in one of those times when a general war with powers hostile to our way of life seems to be looming but is of course not inevitable. That our potential enemies are coming together is a warning sign. ....

'A modern, living place': Why John Bateson is a champion of Kendal

Andrew Thomas talks to John Bateson, whose interests in history and politics ensure he is passionate about history – but who also wants to ensure people are looked after well in the present and future.
John Bateson is firmly rooted in the Kendal and Oxenholme area. One of his ancestors, Thomas, moved to Old Hutton from Bentham in 1732 and three of John’s four grandparents were born in Kendal.
John, 66, was born at the former Helme Chase Maternity Hospital and grew up at his parents’ house at Bolefoot in Oxenholme, where he still lives.
His father worked at Oxenholme station, which partly inspired John’s lifelong interest in the railways. He has a large collection of railway photographs, many from the steam era, showing locomotives, but also revealing how Oxenholme as a village has developed over the years. ....
