Letter to the editor: We must understand the social construction of race in order to grow

Critical race theory is a tool to help us understand our society. It acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation. Critical race theory is essential, and I am proud that my children have the opportunity to attend a school district where this sort of ongoing work is being practiced in our community.
Critical race theory recognizes that racism is codified in law, embedded in structures and woven into public policy and that the systemic nature of racism is mainly responsible for reproducing racial inequality. It grew out of critical legal studies, which argued that the law was not objective or apolitical. ....

Nauset Superintendent Tom Conrad To Retire In June

ORLEANS Tom Conrad’s long service to the Nauset Public Schools, first as principal of the high school and then as superintendent, will end with his retirement in June. Conrad shared the news at a joint meeting of the Nauset school committees Feb. 3.
“I have been truly blessed to be in public education over 43 years, 29 of which in the Nauset system,” he said. “I am totally grateful to be able to work in a community that values education at the highest level.” Conrad promised to work toward a smooth transition to a new leader for the system. ....

In September 2020, President Trump issued an executive order excluding from federal contracts any diversity and inclusion training interpreted as containing âDivisive Concepts,â âRace or Sex Stereotyping,â and âRace or Sex Scapegoating.â Among the content considered âdivisiveâ is Critical Race Theory (CRT). In response, the African American Policy Forum, led by legal scholar KimberlÃ© Crenshaw, launched the #TruthBeTold campaign to expose the harm that the order poses. Reports indicate that over 300 diversity and inclusion trainings have been canceled as a result of the order. And over 120 civil rights organizations and allies signed a letter condemning the executive order. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Melissa Gilbert Named Burris Elementary School Principal – WBIW

(MITCHELL) – Melissa Gilbert has been named Burris Elementary School Principal after Jessica Jones moves to her new position as Mitchell Community Schools Assistant Superintendent.

Gilbert has finished her second semester as assistant principal at Mitchell Junior High School, which was her first administrative position.
Gilbert is in her 21st year in education with most of that time teaching sixth grade at Orleans Elementary School.
At Orleans her focus was mostly English/Language Arts but she also taught Science and Geography.
In addition, she has completed a STEM fellowship with ROI in the spring of 2020. ....
