The EU just announced it’s not raising any further the duties it put on US imports in retaliation for Donald Trump’s steel and aluminium tariffs back in 2018, an increase that was due to come in on June 1. In return for this reprieve it gets . . . what, exactly? More talks, it would appear. The US says a more comprehensive strategy to address global steel overcapacity is needed before it can lift tariffs. Well, yes, and free ice cream and a souvenir Make Protectionism Respectable Again baseball cap for all, but overcapacity is mainly a Chinese problem. How is the EU supposed to deliver it?

Last week, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced a pretty big shift in the U.S. position on intellectual property rights for coronavirus vaccines: “The Administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines. We will actively participate in text-based negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) needed to make that happen.”

A Cornish branch of the Royal British Legion has paid tribute to HRH Prince Philip.
Timed to coincide with the national minute's silence to mark the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Truro branch of the RBL organised a short but poignant tribute at the Truro war memorial on Saturday April 17.
The ceremony was held at the Truro war memorial on Saturday April 17.
Branch Chairman, Ralph Knight, spoke words of salutation for the years of duty to the country that epitomised the Prince's life.
He also made reference to the service that the Duke gave during his time in the Royal Navy and to the many servicemen who gave their lives in WWII, a conflict in which Prince Philip saw active service.

President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 on March 11. I tend to label this as “Stimulus 3.0” as the most notable item is the direct payments coming soon of $1,400 to certain citizens. In fact, one of my clients already received their payment as early as Saturday, March 13!
However, there are many more provisions in this law than just the direct payments.
This article is not meant to be a full explanation of the act. Rather it is meant to be an attempt to share the highlights of key provisions for individuals I encounter at the college’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, or in my own small practice and other similar taxpayers in the Clinton County community.
