Film Review: In The Earth – SLUG Magazine

In Theaters 04.16
It’s difficult to know where to begin in a review of a film like
In The Earth because the words “I want an apology” would pretty well cover everything, but it wouldn’t be much of an article. I actually had a reserved virtual seat for this film at
Sundance in January and had multiple chances to watch it, in theory, but every time I got close, I thought of director Ben Wheatley’s last film, the Netflix remake of
Alfred Hitchcock’s
Rebecca, and decided that there were other films playing at the Festival that I wanted to take advantage of seeing while I could do so. In fairness to Wheatley, no one considered ....

April 13, 2021 by archyde
Refresh for updates…On Monday, a number of prominent Hollywood figures took to social media to mourn the closure of Arclight Cinemas.
“Well this sucks,” tweeted
Knives Out and
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. “Every single person who worked at the Arclight loved movies, and you felt it. Sending love to every usher, manager and projectionist who rocked that blue shirt and made it such a special place.”
Meanwhile, Barry Jenkins the Oscar winner behind
Moonlight, and upcoming Amazon series
The Underground Railroad simply tweeted, “F K.”
The Old Guard,
Beyond the Lights), too, felt the hurt, tweeting, “This is so painful. The Arclight is my go-to. Clean, great sound, assigned stadium seating, great popcorn, usher movie introductions. A true movie-going experience.” ....

There is a term in Portuguese, saudade, which my Portuguese-American sister-in-law tells me has no absolute English translation. But it is meant to describe a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves, according to Wikipedia, which also notes that, Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never be had again. It s safe to say the feelings of saudade are all over the place right now as we hit the one year mark of life in pandemic times. And those final days lived in ignorant bliss are both a salve and melancholic trigger. ....

It s somehow fitting that a horror helmer whose career kicked off with viral videos has gone and made a pandemic movie that infects the id.

Last year, Ben Wheatley released a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca” in which his heroine suffers a trippy newlywed’s nightmare. She’s married to Armie Hammer, following him through the halls of Manderley, and the hallway carpet turns to crawling ivy, grabbing her ankles and pulling her down toward hell. This hallucination stands out in the otherwise traditional film, but it’s one of the few moments in “Rebecca” where we sense the filmmaker’s personality coming through. That freaky interlude might as well have b ....
