Over 400,000 men enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces to fight in World War I. Nearly one in every five of them was never to return. As every strata of society searched for meaning amidst such cataclysmic loss, many turned to Spiritualism a fringe religion built on the belief that “death is not a cessation of life but a mere change in condition” and that those who had passed on could communicate with the living.

Anzac Day: Private Smith, the Kiwi who invaded Russia


But Private Thomas “Peter” Smith​ was the ultimate war-time adventurer, and a two-time-winner of military medals. He was also part of a unique group of New Zealanders who invaded Russia.
Smith was among the Commonwealth soldiers who answered the call of the British Secretary State for War in May 1919 to form the North Russia Relief force.

The ABC will cover Anzac Day services in all states and territories on Sunday 25 April as marches return to towns and cities across the country.
The Director of ABC Regional & Local, Judith Whelan said Anzac Day still carried deep meaning for Australians. “This was evident in last year’s coverage when Australians from every part of the country stood at their gates at dawn to remember those who have served.”
“Anzac Day continues to be one of the largest and most important events the ABC covers. This year we will have ABC crews in all our major cities and in towns, covering local commemorations and connecting them with all Australians across all our platforms.” ....
