Following the 1949 Chinese revolution, Chiang Kai-shek, his nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) and defeated armies fled to Taiwan where they established a military dictatorship protected by the US Navy.
This abruptly changed after Nixon’s visit to China in 1972 where he met with Mao Zedong and concluded a de-facto anti-Soviet alliance. The US and other countries established diplomatic relations on the basis that they recognised Beijing as the legitimate government of all China including Taiwan. The US ended its formal ties with Taipei.
A half century later, the Biden administration, following on from Obama and Trump, is escalating a dangerous confrontation with China on all fronts including in the South and East China Seas and allegations of China’s human rights abuses, particularly of Muslim Uyghurs. ....

The Australian Information Commissioner, Angelene Falk, also last year directed the Defence Department to release Naval Group’s original bid details.
The Defence Department is currently challenging that directive in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and Naval Group has joined those proceedings. ....

Rape-accused Australian cabinet minister considering public statement

An Australian cabinet minister accused of rape is set to make a public statement
The Australian federal cabinet minister accused of a decades-old rape is considering making a public statement as early as tomorrow to declare his innocence after NSW police closed their investigation because they did not have enough admissible evidence to proceed.
The minister has spoken to others about going public after widespread conjecture about his identity and the allegations made to police last year about a rape in Sydney in January 1988.
The move would have a clear parallel with a statement from former Australian Labour leader Bill Shorten in August 2014 when Victorian Police closed an investigation into him over an allegation of rape in the 1980s. ....
