Biden pushed to implement new standard for fossil-free power by 2035

27 April 2021
US media outlet Axios is reporting that a broad and powerful coalition of environmental groups will be ramping up pressure on US President Joe Biden to implement an effective policy mechanism to realise a rapid shift in America’s electric grid.
The Biden administration went to the recent election with an ambition to achieve 100% carbon free power by 2035, but has so far not begun the process of creating legislative instruments to realise this change. The ambition aligns with the Biden administrations intention to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and the recently announced interim 2030 target of 50% to 52% by 2030.
A recent analysis from the University of Maryland showed that emissions reductions in the US electricity sector will provide the vast majority of reductions prior to 2030, to achieve a 51% emissions reductions target, from 2005 levels. Of all sectors in the US economy, greenhouse gas reductions in the electricity sector would provide 28% of ....

Coal mines are the engines of climate change. Time to start treating them like it.

It is, of course, a brave and important thing to do. As I have written here before, the act of removing fossil fuels from the ground is a key step in the process that leads to them being burned, and greenhouse gas emissions being released. It is, broadly in Australian culture, politics and media, treated as if it a wholly neutral act – a passive facilitation between supply and demand. “They’d simply get their coal elsewhere if we didn’t do it”, is the primary catch-cry.
The ‘drug dealer’s defence’ pretends there is only a one-way relationship between supply and demand. But, of course, plentiful supply leads to lower costs, which increases consumption of the product. In this case, coal is the primary driver of the greatest threat ever faced by our species, and a direct threat to the lived experiences of these teenagers. ....
