Chinese ambassador Cheng Jingye gives rare public warning to Australia

China’s top diplomat in Canberra says it is Australia, not China, that has engaged in economic coercion, and issued a veiled warning that Chinese students and tourists will be reluctant to return post-pandemic because of a hostile environment.
Chinese ambassador Cheng Jingye lamented that attacking his country had become the “politically correct” view in Australia, repeating Beijing’s insistence that blame for the deteriorating bilateral relationship rested with the Morrison government.

In an hour-long online presentation to Australia China Business Council members, Mr Cheng said it “doesn’t hold water” to claim China had become more assertive. ....

UK to send Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier to Japan, S Korea


The United Kingdom’s HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier will lead a flotilla of Royal Navy ships through Asian waters on port visits to Japan and South Korea on its maiden deployment, the British embassy in Tokyo has announced, as Australia warned of threats of conflict in the region.
The high-profile voyage, announced by the British embassy on Monday, is aimed at bolstering security ties in East Asia and comes amid tensions in the region as concern grows in Japan over any threat posed to neighbouring Taiwan by China, as well as increased tensions in the disputed South China Sea. ....

Tamil refugee flown from Nauru to Australia with serious injuries - Pacific Beat

A Tamil refugee injured in a car crash on Nauru last week has been flown to Australia for medical treatment, advocates say.
The 36-year-old man was hit by a car from behind and suffered injuries to his left arm, back, shoulder, leg and hip.
After spending a week in hospital on Nauru, he was flown to Sydney on Saturday morning, where he is now being treated in intensive care.
The incident is now being investigated by Nauru police, who declined to comment.
Australia s Tamil community have expressed grave concern for the man s wellbeing.
Thanush Selverasa, who spent many years in immigration centres on Manus island and now lives in Sydney, said the incident was very upsetting. ....
