Editorial: State of Florida and City of Jacksonville need to up their game for COVID-19 vaccines

Florida Times-Union
This country, this state, this city are under attack by the coronavirus. The vaccines are the ammunition that can stop it, but authorities seem unable to come up with a logical plan to get them distributed.
This isn’t just a health care issue. It’s an issue of leadership and logistics. It’s more urgent than ever as new variants of the virus are discovered in this country.
Last week, the Jacksonville branch of the NAACP called out Mayor Lenny Curry for the racial disparity in the distribution of vaccines.
Black Americans have special challenges when it comes to COVID-19. They are more susceptible to the virus. They are more likely to have pre-existing conditions that affect their recovery. They are more likely to have transportation issues that make it difficult for them to access health care and vaccination sites. And they represent a quarter of our population.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The city of Jacksonville is set to begin giving second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at two senior centers starting Monday morning as the first public recipients of vaccines at the state-run Prime Osborn Convention Center will begin returning for a second shot.
Between the three sites, about 2,000 people are expected to receive their second doses each day this week. That’s nearly double the average number of people in Jacksonville receiving their first dose each day because supplies are still limited.

The Florida Department of Health said Florida residents 65 and older and frontline healthcare workers can enter their information on that website and will be contacted when doses are available at state-run vaccination sites in their area. In Northeast Florida, the only site is currently at Regency Square in Jacksonville.
Residents who pre-register “will be contacted by phone call, text or email and will be assisted in scheduling an appointment,” the state said.
Jared Moskowitz, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, told state lawmakers this week that counties can pull names from the waiting list and contact residents when appointments become available.

Vaccine program is well run
A few days ago you in Another View had a very critical picture of the vaccine program at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. Have you or any of your staff participated in that particular program? I have! It is very well-run and efficient.  Being all by appointment, the lines move quickly and nobody waits in line for hours. Yes, appointments are difficult to get due to the large number of people. BUT, that is no reason for your paper to be so critical of a very important program and the people working there!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla Those eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Duval County will no longer be able to access the shot at the city-run Prime Osborn Convention Center site, according to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.
Curry tweeted Wednesday morning that the Duval County Department of Health will end its Prime Osborn vaccination rollout for initial doses and take no new appointments. Moving forward, all vaccinations will be scheduled at the state-run Regency Square Mall site, the mayor s tweet said.

COVID-19 vaccine: Scarcity could close two Jacksonville-run sites

Mayor Lenny Curry said Tuesday the city s initial allotment of the COVID-19 vaccines for use at two city-run sites will run out by the end of the day Thursday and cause a halt to vaccines at those senior centers until the city can get more supplies.
Curry said Jacksonville is like cities across the nation that face far more demand for the COVID-19 vaccines than can be met by the flow of vaccines that s sent each week to states for dispersal to local communities.
It s a fluid situation and we re all going to have to adapt, which is what we ve done as a community since March of last year, he said, referring to the emergence of the global pandemic in Jacksonville.

Drive-thru dino show opens at Lot J

TIAA Bank Field s Lot J has made a lot of headlineslately. But before they do anything there, dinosaurs are going to take over for a week or so.
Jurassic Quest, an animatronic dinosaur show, takes over the lot Friday through Jan. 24 for a drive-thru dinosaur experience.
It s a similar show to the one that played indoors at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in 2017 and 19, but redesigned for a pandemic era.
It s how we’ve adapted to the current situation, said Jurassic Quest spokesman Nick Schaefer. We were traditionally an indoor show. We had to adapt quickly to keep our place in the world today.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite the city of Jacksonville urging people NOT to line up before 10 a.m. Tuesday, hundreds of people waited for hours outside the Mandarin and Lane Wiley Senior Centers to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
The vaccine is available Tuesday to seniors, health care workers and first responders with birthdays in March or April.
Both Monday and Tuesday, hopeful seniors began lining up before dawn at the senior centers, which are vaccinating Duval County residents 65 years old and older and front-line medical workers not by appointment, but based on their birth month.

COVID-19 vaccine: Jacksonville launches 2 new vaccination sites Monday

The city of Jacksonville will start its COVID-19 vaccinations Monday by using a system in which the birth months of Duval County residents will determine what day of the week they can show up at two senior centers on a first-come, first-served basis.
The initial rollout of the vaccines will follow the state s guidelines for the vaccine to go to those who are 65 and older, along with front-line medical workers and first responders.
Where to get vaccinated in Jacksonville
Jacksonville will operate vaccination sites at the Mandarin Senior Center, 3848 Hartley Road, and the Lane Wiley Senior Center at 6710 Wiley Road on the Westside. Those city-run sites will be in addition to the state-run operation at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
