SUMMARY
The Great Depression of the 1930s was the most serious economic crisis in American history. A combination of economic maladies including overproduction, inequitable distribution of wealth, excessive borrowing and speculation, inappropriate tax and tariff policies, and a shaky banking structure produced an economic collapse that was announced by the stock market crash of October 1929. Over the next four years, millions of Americans (amounting to 25 percent of the work force) lost their jobs; millions more worked only part-time. Factories closed their doors, homes and farms were foreclosed, and the banking system verged on collapse. Itinerants, soup kitchens, and shantytowns became common features of the urban landscape. In Virginia the economic impact of the Great Depression was less severe than in other parts of the country. While the state suffered industrial reverses, above-normal unemployment, and much hardship, its citizens did not experience, in the same degree, ....

The following York County restaurants were found to have violated Pennsylvania’s health and safety regulations during inspections between Jan. 17-23.
Inspections are overseen by the Department of Agriculture. The department notes that in many cases violations are corrected by the restaurant before inspectors leave.

Editorial: 100 years ago, Virginia Republicans purged Black voters from their ranks


This year marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most shameful political events in Virginia history, one that has repercussions to this day.
In 1921, Virginia Republicans purged Black voters from their ranks. Virginia Republicans weren’t alone. Republicans across the South were doing the same thing, in a failed bid to make themselves more acceptable to white voters.
Much context is in order: Before the Civil War, Democrats were the dominant party in the South. The Republican candidates for president weren’t even on Southern ballots in 1856 and 1860. After the Civil War, newly enfranchised Black voters were naturally loyal to “the party of Lincoln.” The Handbook of Texas says that in that state Black voters accounted for 90% of the Republican vote in the 1880s. ....

Black Savannah churches to celebrate Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Association of Savannah and Vicinity has scheduled the 158th worship service of the Emancipation Proclamation for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 1. The virtual service will include preaching, singing, reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, remarks by leading city and county officials, and special recognitions.
Rev. Chester Ellis, whose contributions to the association and to the community are immeasurable, will receive a special award on the eve of his inauguration as chairman of the Chatham County Commission.
Bishop Matthew M. Odum, pastor of Temple of Glory Community Church, will serve as speaker. Those scheduled to make remarks include senatorial candidate Rev. Raphael Warnock. ....
