At the end of last year’s King of the Baggers race at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, one thing was clear: a pack of 11 Harley-Davidson motorcycles was no match for two Indian Challengers, which made short work of the Milwaukee machines.

The race ended with Indian riders Tyler O’Hara and Frankie Garcia clinching the first and third places on the podium. Sandwiched between them was Hayden Gillim, riding a Harley-Davidson in the Vance & Hines Racing Team colors.
That’s right, the same Vance & Hines team that earlier this year lost factory backing for its efforts in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle series on account of the bike maker’s reorganization plan. It’s not long now until the first-ever MotoAmerica King of the Baggers series kicks off. It will happen this weekend at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, when Harley and Indian baggers will line up on the starting grid of the first-of-three race in the competition.

Last year, 11 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were pitted against just two Indian Challengers at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca track. For the first time, such motorcycles were allowed to race there, and the feeling everyone got when seeing the two-wheelers chase each other was so intense that 2020 s single race is now an entire series.

Although tiny in size (just three races last time we checked, down from the initial five announced at the beginning of the year), the so-called King of the Baggers is a MotoAmerica event, open to all qualified AMA license holders. But it will not be the only competition where we’ll get to see such bikes racing in the coming months. ....

Last year, one of the biggest news on the motorcycle front was Indian taking on Harley-Davidson for the King of the Baggers title. The one-time action took place at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, where two Indian Challengers trashed 11 Harley-Davidson motorcycles in a race. And now, part of the hardware that made it possible is becoming available to the public.

To be able to take on the task back then, the Indians were specially prepped by a team comprising people from S&S, but also Roland Sands himself.
