Right-to-carry bill dies in Senate | Local | The Journal Gazette

General Assembly
Brown s panel won t give hearing on ending permits
NIKI KELLY | The Journal Gazette
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Senate will not hear a measure that would have eliminated firearms carry permits in Indiana – a move that kills the bill for the session.
Sen. Liz Brown, R-Fort Wayne, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and said she would not give House Bill 1369 a hearing. Instead, the Senate will eliminate the $75 fee to get a lifetime carry permit and cover the cost in the state budget. The legislature previously eliminated the five-year permit fee.
But Rep. Ben Smaltz, R-Auburn – author of the bill – said it s about more than the fee. He said Hoosiers are waiting months for a permit because of a backlog in getting fingerprints and background checks. ....

COVID shield law approved

Apr 5, 2021
A bill carried by a pair of southern Indiana Senators to provide a liability shield for organizations and businesses has been signed into law.
Senate Enrolled Act 1 was among the first 17 bills Governor Eric Holcomb signed late last week.
The COVID shield law was authored by State Senator Mark Messmer of Jasper and among its sponsors was Senator Eric Bassler of Washington.
“This bill provides protection for businesses, government offices, schools, churches, not-for-profits and just about anyone from being sued if someone contracts COVID during an event or operation at their facilities,” said Bassler. “It really provides some protection from class action law suits if a number of people come down with COVID and it is traced back to a single location.” ....

Police split on nixing gun permits | Local | The Journal Gazette

General Assembly
Some see danger, others see undue burden on citizens
NIKI KELLY | The Journal Gazette
INDIANAPOLIS – A divided police community highlighted a hearing Wednesday to eliminate a requirement for Hoosiers to get a permit to carry a firearm in public.
“We as an association believe eliminating the handgun licensing system is an unnecessary risk to public safety,” said Lafayette Police Chief Patrick Flannelly, on behalf of the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police.
And he noted that just because you carry a firearm doesn’t make you safer since Indiana requires no gun training.
But former Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers said the permitting process is a burden on citizens to exercise a constitutional right. ....
