Sofitel shooting: 19 arrests as cops wrap up investigation into Mongols vs Head Hunters gang war


Several shots were fired but no one was injured. The culprit spent weeks on the run.

A shotgun police seized from the Head Hunters during their months-long investigation.
Auckland detectives launched a large-scale investigation involving lengthy manhunts and officers from across Tamaki Makaurau, Northland and the National Organised Crime Group.
They targeted Head Hunters gang pads in Mt Wellington and Browns Bay and Mongols-linked premises in Silverdale and Murrays Bay.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton, of the Waitematā CIB, said 19 people had now been arrested when announcing the conclusion of the operation on Tuesday.
McNaughton said seven of those are members or associates of the Mongols, a notorious outlaw motorcycle club headquartered in California, whose Kiwi presence has grown with the arrival of 501 deportees from Australia. ....

A Police operation involving Auckland gang members has seen 19 people charged

The operation focused on incidents since early April, involving Mongols and Head Hunters - arsons and drive-by shootings.
The most high profile incident is the shooting at the Sofitel Hotel on Auckland s waterfront.
Other locations targeted were Head Hunters gang premises in Mt Wellington and Browns Bay, and Mongols premises in Silverdale and Murrays Bay.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton says there is a range of charges, including firearms and drug related ones.
He says further charges are possible. ....

The conflict between the Head Hunters and Mongols hit headlines when shots were fired inside the Sofitel Hotel foyer in Auckland central on 15 April.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton said no one had been injured in a string of gang related incidents.
However, these were extremely serious and there was a significant risk to members of the public, McNaughton said.
A police investigation team involving staff from Tāmaki Makaurau, Northland and the National Organised Crime Group worked on the operation for two months.
McNaughton said earlier in April there were arsons and drive-by shootings at properties associated with the two gangs. ....

A total 19 people have been arrested in relation to a spate of serious arsons and drive-by shootings including the gunfire at an Auckland inner city hotel involving Mongols and Head Hunters gang members.
Police have now arrested and charged 19 people following a lengthy three month operation focusing on an ongoing series of incidents involving individuals from the Mongols and Head Hunters gangs.
The final person was arrested late last week.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton said the incidents are believed to have started around April 5 and involved a number of serious matters involving arsons and drive-by shootings at properties associated with those gangs. ....
