Weeks State Park presents Waterfalls of the White Mountains July 29 and 30.


LANCASTER — The White Mountains of New Hampshire are home to many gushing, cascading waterfalls waiting to be discovered. Bruce Bolnick, author of “Waterfalls of the White Mountains” will present an evening describing these waterfalls and guide us through an excursion to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He has served for years as a Volunteer Naturalist for the Appalachian Mountain Club and Nature Guide at Mass Audubon s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield.
The completely revised and updated edition of “Waterfalls of the New Hampshire” outlines hiking trails ideal for observing the more than 100 waterfalls in the region, no matter experience level or ability. Each hike details the distance, difficulty, altitude gain, and directions to the starting point. Helpful tips and suggestions are offered, such as the best times of year for each hike, best vantage points for viewing the falls, great swimming holes for cooling down, and uncovered sce ....

Planning on doing some hiking this summer? You’re in good company. According to a recent study by RunRepeat and partner AllTrails, the number of hikes logged in 2020 was up 171.36 percent compared to 2019. The number of individual hikers over that same time period increased by 134.7 percent. And the number of hikes logged per hiker was up by more than 50 percent in 2020 over the period from 2016 to 2019. That’s a lot of boots on the ground! ....

As we move into spring, it seems that birds are suddenly everywhere. Whether year-round residents like cardinals or chickadees, or migratory species like warblers returning from their wintering grounds in warm, faraway places, a lot of birds start advertising their presence by singing.
“Male songbirds sing to establish territories and attract mates,” said Wayne Petersen, director of the Massachusetts Important Bird Areas program for Mass Audubon. “Good territories help males attract females.” ....
