Albania's Socialist Party vows to dismiss president – EURACTIV.com


Albania’s Socialist Party (SP), the projected winner of recent parliamentary elections, is set to launch the procedure to dismiss President Ilir Meta once the Central Elections Commission has announced the final results.
Taulant Balla, the chief socialist in parliament stated on Wednesday that they will “prepare his pension papers as soon as the ballot counting process is complete”. 
SP leader Edi Rama clashed with President Ilir Meta throughout the campaign after Meta left SP and formed a new party, the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI). 
SP, which is projected to have won 74 mandates in the election, has been quick to remind Meta that he had promised to resign if the party won 71 or more seats in parliament. ....

 The United States and the European Union are urging Albania’s leaders to set aside their differences and move forward toward establishing a stable democracy after elections Sunday that gave the ruling Socialist Party a third consecutive mandate.   
Prime Minister Edi Rama’s party is the first to achieve the feat since the collapse of communism more than three decades ago. It secured 74 out of 140 seats in Parliament, more than enough to govern without coalition partners, if it chooses to do so.  
However, the main opposition Democratic Party has not yet accepted the results, which follow a heated and occasionally violent campaign. What comes next may determine whether Albania can move forward toward becoming a full-fledged democracy and integrate in the European Union.    ....
