China’s five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, the world’s largest filled-aperture and most sensitive radio telescope, officially opened to the world on Wednesday.
China’s colossal “Sky Eye” telescope is exciting the international scientific community.
The World Laureates Association said George Smoot III, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics, is one of those interested in making use of it.
FAST, short for Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, is the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Commonly known as Tianyan, literally “Sky Eye,” it loo ....

Forecast: Spring blooms in time for Easter weekend, warmer too!

A beautiful amount of color on trees and bushes should make for a very photogenic Easter weekend.
Still breezy this afternoon in Columbia, but warmer! Highs in the upper 50s today with winds up to 25-30mphhttps://t.co/lLUZxguxEU#mowx@KOMUnewspic.twitter.com/i0pyKgGAPw Tim Schmidt (@komuTim) April 2, 2021
Still breezy today and very dry outside. Highs will be in the upper 50s this afternoon with winds gusting to 30 mph.
The National Weather Service also is asking Missouri residents to be very cautious if burning any brush piles today and this weekend. Dry, windy conditions could lead to uncontrolled fires. ....

CERN physicists figured out how to study antimatter by cooling it with a laser

CERN physicists figured out how to study antimatter by cooling it with a laser
My next dream is to make a fountain of anti-atoms by tossing the laser-cooled antimatter into free space
on March 31, 2021, 17:05
In context: Antimatter on the atomic scale is identical to normal matter. The difference is that it has an opposite charge. Therefore when the two meet, they annihilate each other. It is difficult to produce and even harder to analyze because of this property.
Researchers in CERN s ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus) at the University of British Columbia have discovered a way to lower antimatter s temperature to near absolute zero using a laser. This breakthrough will make it easier for physicists to study the volatile material. Cooling antihydrogen atoms to almost zero Kelvin slows them down enough that scientists can take more precise measurements and perform experiments with them. ....

Physicists Researched an Algorithm to Detect Taylor Swift's Emotions

Two physicists developed an algorithm to analyze Taylor Swift s emotions in each of her songs.
The analysis was published on April 1, and the paper is meant as a joke but the science is real.
A total of nine hours, 43 minutes, and six seconds of music were analyzed by the pair.
Two physicists from the University of Chicago released an in-depth report on Thursday outlining an algorithm that they developed to analyze 149 Taylor Swift songs to decode the award-winning singer s emotions over the past 14 years.
The report, titled I Knew You Were Trouble: Emotional Trends in the Repertoire of Taylor Swift, was published on arXiv, a prominent online repository for papers on math, science, and artificial intelligence. And despite the fact that it was released on April Fools Day, the research and data that went into this paper are real. ....
