ETSU seeking participants for Upward Bound program

Bryan Bernard, a senior at Sullivan South High School, was initially on the fence about joining the Upward Bound program at East Tennessee State University.
But it ended up being one of the best decisions heâs ever made, allowing him to be himself around people who grew up in similar conditions.
âOne of the biggest benefits for me would be the people and the community,â Bernard said. âI was really able to branch out and find people that I connected with and was able to gain support from them in school and anything else really.â
With recruitment difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic, East Tennessee State University is seeking applications in ninth and 10th grades for its Upward Bound program, which aims to help high schoolers from low-income backgrounds, first-generation college students and students with disabilities attend and graduate from college. Significant disability is real. Some people struggle to make decisions or understand the world around them. In calling for an end to guardianship, I am not being Pollyannaish about the individuals whom it is usually imposed upon. There will always be some need for proxy decision-making. But guardianship should be the nuclear option: It strips every legal right a person has, and once entered, it is extremely difficult to end. Disabled children in schools are legally entitled to the “least restrictive environment” under federal law. This means that children who receive special education are entitled to spend as much time as possible in non-special-education classes, making the same choices as their nondisabled peers. Their educational plans are regularly reevaluated, as people’s needs are rarely static. The same standard is not applied, however, to disabled adults. If a person has difficulty managing money, why should they lose their right to vote or to marry? Instead of strip ....

How acquiring debating skills changed the lives of six differently-abled individuals in the UAE
The UAE government announced a five-year strategy for people of determination to spotlight the country’s longstanding commitment to inclusion in diverse areas, including employment, health, housing as well as opportunities for learning and development. Project Determination the world’s first debate led by People of Determination is an extension of that vision.
It harbours the very essence of the government-led initiative to showcase the many special talents and capabilities of people of determination when given a suitable and empowering platform. This exemplary endeavour has been the labour of love for high-school student Shrish Janarthanan. The 17-year-old Dubai College student has been a debate champion in several national and international competitions, including Emirates Debate Championship and Indian Rotary ....
