Germany to fine companies violating labour, environ rights in global supply chain

BERLIN: Germany on Wednesday took a step towards forcing companies to take responsibility for any labour or environmental abuses in their global supply chain, with a new law that allows for fines worth millions of euros.
The law was spurred on by a deadly fire in a textile factory in Pakistan and a devastating dam collapse at a Brazilian iron ore mine that killed more than 250 people – both of which had links to German companies. ....

Di Mondo has a bachelor s degree in physical science and master s degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Guelph. He also has executive certificates in venture finance from the University of Oxford Saïd Business School and in strategy and innovation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.
After graduate school, I saw two options for myself: one, to continue down the academic path by pursuing a Ph.D. or, two, head out into the real world and start working within industry, he said. I made the decision to go directly into industry by joining GreenMantra upon graduation. I chose the industry path because I was eager to get out there and see what I could contrib ....

WHILE the UK Government has lauded its eleventh-hour agreement with the EU for a zero-tariff, zero-quota trade deal, businesses and industry groups have warned about a raft of issues that require further negotiation and clarification, and about new, costly administrative burdens that are impacting businesses and remapping supply chains.
On 24 December, in the wake of news that the EU and UK had avoided a no-deal Brexit, there was a wave of relief that importers and exporters would avoid tariffs. Trade group Make UK said a no-deal outcome would have caused catastrophic damage to manufacturing in Britain. An SNP MSP who represents Grangemouth has labelled the country’s biggest polluter “misguided” after their billionaire boss refused to appear in front of MSPs investigating Scotland’s response to the climate emergency.
Petrochemicals company, Ineos, run by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has snubbed an appearance in front of a Holyrood committee investigating the Scottish Government s proposals for responding to the crisis.
The company told The Herald that it had turned down the offer to appear before MSPs because it believes it would be “better served by involving the Chemical Industry Association who can give a broader industry input”. ....
