US considering lifting sanctions on Iran's supreme leader Khamenei

The Biden administration is considering lifting sanctions on Iran s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as part of negotiations aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal.
As per NBC News, the information was disclosed by a former US official and two people familiar with the matter. The US and Iranian negotiators have discussed the possible move in indirect talks in Vienna, as part of a wider set of compromises that would see the United States return to the 2015 pact and Iran once again abide by restrictions on its nuclear program, the sources said, reported The Frontier Post.
I think that s definitely an Iranian demand, said Vali Nasr, professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies who worked as a diplomat in the Obama administration. And I think the US is open to it. ....

US says Iran negotiations are 'positive'

The State Department said Tuesday that indirect talks with Iran over its nuclear program remain “positive” after an attack on an Iranian nuclear facility last week threw the negotiations into jeopardy.
State Department spokesperson Ned Pricetold reporters Tuesday that indirect talks through intermediaries in Vienna are ongoing but a full return to the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) remains a long way off.
“I would just say generally that the talks have continued in Vienna, as we know. The United States and Iran, we have, together, a stated, common objective of returning to mutual compliance with the JCPOA. We have been engaged constructively in a diplomatic process to achieve that goal. I think it continues to be fair to say that the talks have been business-like, they have been positive,” Price said.  ....

Understanding the Iran Threat Network | PressReleasePoint

Research Questions
How does the ITN factor into Iran s strategy?
What objectives does Tehran pursue via the ITN?
How does the regime think about and categorize different ITN members?
The Iran Threat Network (ITN) is a formidable force made up of tens of thousands of fighters. It spreads across the Middle East and South Asia and has ties to and influence in Africa and Latin America. The ITN affords Iran the ability to have a presence and project power throughout the region, and to deter and harass its adversaries. The network consists of diverse and disparate groups, which is reflected in the nature and amount of support provided and the level of command and control exerted by Tehran over each group. These differences allow Iran to employ the ITN to achieve four buckets of political and military objectives. ....

Iran on Monday accused Israel of being behind a sabotage attack on an underground nuclear facility and warned that there would be a response.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh blamed Israel for the act of “nuclear terrorism” that took place on Sunday, The Associated Press reports.
The news service notes that Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin (Bibi) NetanyahuMORE has previously said that he would do anything to stop Iran’s nuclear program, calling it an “existential threat” to his country.

Dealing with Iran: Will Joe Biden be the new Jimmy Carter?

Like Biden today, Carter found himself caught in a vice between international reputation abroad and threats to his government at home. At the time, the deposed shah’s supporters, including Kissinger, clamored to ensure that the U.S. rejected Iran’s revolutionary Islamic leaders; when Europeans lined up to present their credentials to the new government in 1979, Carter’s envoys were not among them. Pressure from regional allies such as Egypt’s Anwar Sadat, raised questions about the value of American friendship, a point Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party’s aspiring presidential candidate, made at every opportunity according to Carter’s memoirs. Risk preparedness seemed best served by a go-slow policy designed, it was hoped, to build leverage. Lost on Carter and his deeply divided Cabinet was that decisiveness grounded in national interest and legal principles, is the prerogative of great power as President Trump ....
