Iran s health professionals reject Russia s Covid-19 vaccine
Following Iranian authorities’ approval of Russia s Sputnik V vaccine, health experts in Iran rejected the vaccine, saying that they would not use the jab for themselves and their family members.
It s only because of Iranian s bad luck that the government is going to import a vaccine from Russia,
- Minoo Mohraz, Iranian health official
Last week, Iran s Zarif announced that Tehran would import two million doses of Russia s vaccine by 20 March. However, Minoo Mohraz, a member of Iran s national coronavirus task force, immediately denounced the officials decision to buy the Russian vaccine. ....

Tehran, Iran – An announcement by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif last week that Russia’s primary coronavirus vaccine candidate has become the first approved foreign vaccine in Iran sparked a fierce debate.

We are neither your emulators nor your subjects, Iranian journalist and former political prisoner Zia Nabavi recently proclaimed, addressing Iran s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whatever vaccines you don t trust in, you shouldn t use them yourself! Nabavi s daring rebuke of the most powerful figure in Iran came after Khamenei bizarrely banned English and American vaccines in a televised speech last week. In a country reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, the backlash has been fierce.
Over 50,000 Iranians have died from the coronavirus according to the official count. The real number could be double or triple this figure, according to a senior Health Ministry official and investigations carried out by BBC Persian. Iran s frontline healthcare workers have been devastated, many of its hospitals are overflowing, and its economy, already ....

Despite a coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 56,000 Iranians, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has banned Western coronavirus vaccines, claiming they’re untrustworthy.
“The import of American and British vaccines is banned,” Khamenei said on January 8.
The surprise announcement was met with anger by Iranians who have in past weeks called on their government to purchase safe vaccines as soon as possible.
Analysts and experts accused Khamenei of politicizing the issue and endangering the well-being of Iranian citizens, who are faced with the Middle East’s deadliest outbreak.
Why Did Iran Ban Western Coronavirus Vaccines?
The decision appears to be the result of the worldview of Khamenei, Iran’s highest political and religious authority. Khamenei is deeply mistrustful of the United States and other Western countries and has cited unfounded conspiracy theories about the coronavirus s origins since the early weeks of th ....

Iran, Cuba, Under U.S. Sanctions, Team Up for Covid-19 Vaccine Trials

Jan. 12, 2021 3:01 pm ET
Iran and Cuba have begun trials of a joint Covid-19 vaccine, as Tehran fights the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East while pledging not to use vaccines from the U.S. and U.K.
The Cuban vaccine, called Soberana 02, is the most advanced of Cuba’s four vaccine candidates and will be developed in cooperation between Cuba’s Finlay Vaccine Institute and Iran’s Pasteur Institute, authorities from both countries said Monday.
The cooperation between two staunch opponents of the U.S., which are both under U.S. sanctions, reflects a shared drive for self-sufficiency and less reliance on imports from the West. The name of the vaccine, Soberana, is Spanish for “sovereign.” ....
