China lodges stern representations with U.S., Japan over joint statement

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Wednesday said it “lodged solemn representations” with the United States and Japan over a statement by top officials from both countries that raised concerns about Beijing’s behaviour in in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and the South China Sea.
The joint statement from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and their Japanese counterparts called China’s behaviour inconsistent with the international order.
However, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said topics such as Hong Kong and Xinjiang would not be off the table when top U.S. and Chinese officials meet in Alaska later this week in what will be the first such high-level talks since U.S. Presdident Joe Biden took office. ....

China's Baidu raises $3.1 billion from Hong Kong listing

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Baidu Inc has raised $3.1 billion in its Hong Kong secondary listing, according to a filing by the Chinese internet search giant.

New York-listed Baidu said it will sell 95 million shares at HK$252 ($32.45) apiece as part of the transaction.
The deal showed that the desire of Hong Kong’s retail investors to buy into new stock market transactions shows no signs of slowing.
The retail tranche of the deal, which was worth 5% of the total share sale, was about 100 times oversubscribed, sources told Reuters, who added the institutional tranche was covered multiple times. ....

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union agreed on Wednesday to blacklist Chinese officials for human rights abuses, two diplomats said, the first sanctions against Beijing since an EU arms embargo in 1989 following the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 (Reuters) - AirAsia Group Bhd has raised $82 million from TPG Capital executives, Aimia Inc and others through a private share placement, the Malaysian budget airline said on Wednesday as it looks to ensure liquidity in 2021.
The airline raised 336.46 million ringgit ($81.70 million) over two tranches by issuing 470.21 million new shares, representing 14.07% of the group’s total issued shares.
The airline said investment firm TPG Capital’s founder and chairman David Bonderman and TPG Asia Partners, including Tim Dattels, Ganen Sarbananthan and Zubin Irani, have invested in their personal capacity. ....
