Respect for Indigenous knowledge must lead nature conservation efforts in Canada

The past year has taught us important lessons about the consequences of the harm humans are inflicting on the natural world.
We’re confronting a global biodiversity crisis, losing species and natural places at an unprecedented rate. We’ve also experienced the repercussions of nature’s decline through COVID-19, whose jump from animals to humans may be linked to habitat destruction. And yet the international community failed to achieve a single Aichi Biodiversity Target to curb environmental destruction by 2020.
To combat the biodiversity crisis, we need to fundamentally shift our economy and society and make nature conservation the norm. We urgently need a better understanding of how to motivate people, overcome political barriers, influence economies and alter polities to benefit nature. ....

We are two conservationists: a First Nations Yukoner and Canadian, and a first generation immigrant-settler with dual Poland-U.S. nationality. Our paths crossed through mutual interest in Indigenous-led stewardship, Two-Eyed Seeing, and holistic approaches like One Health. We are proponents of two-eyed seeing which means, “To see from one ey ....

Western's Indigenized astronomy course uses science as a gateway to Indigenous culture

Western is home to one of Canada s only Indigenized astronomy courses, balancing traditional Indigenous and Eurocentric approaches to science.
The course, Two Eyed Seeing and Astronomy, uses the strengths of Indigenous knowing to promote class engagement in the ethics of astronomy and Indigenous history. It was first introduced to Western University undergraduate students as a science credit in September 2019 and is running this semester.
The course creators — Sasha Doxtator of the Oneida Nation, Brianne Derrah of New Post Ojibwe and Huron Metis of the Mattawa harvesting area and Rob Cockcroft of the United Kingdom, now living in southern Ontario — worked together to create a learning space that uses astronomy as a gateway to Indigenous culture, history and the processes of decolonization and reconciliation. ....

Indigenous astronomies and 'astro-colonialism'

Unreserved12:21Indigenous astronomies and astro-colonialism
Astronomy education in Canada is very, very centred in the European model, said Hilding Neilson, who is Mi kmaw and a professor in the department of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Toronto. The way introductory astronomy is generally taught, he explained, it s just this one linear path from the Romans to, essentially, Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Neilson is trying to change the dominant way of approaching astronomy by incorporating Indigenous astronomies in the classroom. Indigenous astronomies, explained Hilding, are the astronomies and the knowledges of the peoples of the land.
Every Nation has their own perspective of the night sky, their own interpretation and knowledge of it, he said.  ....
