Advisory: Study confirms vitamin D, fish oil don't lower atrial fibrillation risk

Credit: Photo by Cedars-Sinai
JAMA (the
Journal of the American Medical Association) confirms that neither vitamin D nor the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil prevent the development of atrial fibrillation (AF), a potentially serious heart rhythm disturbance. The newly published research follows a presentation made by Christine Albert, MD, MPH, at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions last year.
In their
JAMA analysis, Albert and her research team also examined whether vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids might have an impact on paroxysmal versus persistent atrial fibrillation and whether there might be certain subgroups of patients who would be more likely to benefit or be harmed by the supplements. Overall, the results were mostly consistent across types of AF and groups of patients. ....

Aspirin use may decrease ventilation, ICU admission and death in COVID-19 patients

 E-Mail
George Washington University researchers found low dose aspirin may reduce the need for mechanical ventilation, ICU admission and in-hospital mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Final results indicating the lung protective effects of aspirin were published today in
Anesthesia & Analgesia.
As we learned about the connection between blood clots and COVID-19, we knew that aspirin - used to prevent stroke and heart attack - could be important for COVID-19 patients, Jonathan Chow, MD, assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and director of the Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, said. Our research found an association between low dose aspirin and decreased severity of COVID-19 and death. ....

Combining tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, scientists have fabricated a series of heart valve replacements with the ability to incorporate host cells, enabling them to regenerate and grow over time. The valves expanded and maintained their function for a year when implanted into growing lambs, suggesting they could address the dire need for a long-term valve replacement for children with congenital heart disorders. These pediatric patients depend on mechanical or prosthetic heart valves for survival, but current devices often calcify over time and cannot grow alongside the child s heart. As a result, these patients routinely undergo as many as five ....

In the beginning of 2020, Deveria was in the initial stages of recording an LP. Then the coronavirus shutdown brought activities for one of the area’s busiest metal acts screeching to a halt. On top of that, Charles Woodard s day job  was as a cardiac nurse for St. Peter’s Hospital and Albany Associates in Cardiology.
“When COVID-19 started our lives had been completely changed, especially in my profession,” Woodard said in an email. “Every day was a challenge for me, and it still is. In my profession I am there to help people, but it s a struggle daily fighting something that you cannot see, trying to protect yourself and not bring it home to my wife and kids. It was causing so many deaths in the world, so my stress and anxiety level went through the roof.” ....
