More than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic first began, we are all familiar with the ways in which it has impacted industry in the United States. While it decimated brick and mortar businesses and caused thousands of bars and restaurants to close, it also propelled retail trends in e-commerce to light speed. “Direct to consumer” trends are impacting every industry, with consumer convenience as the primary objective.
The alcohol industry is among those irreversibly altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from the obvious pain caused to the bar and restaurant community, the same trends towards consumer convenience have gained substantial momentum. The craft beer and barbecue movements in Texas have grown hand in hand over the past decade. Despite the similar devotion of their fans and dedication of their practitioners, however, they haven’t exactly had a symbiotic relationship but for the occasional barbecue truck parked outside of a brewery. San Antonio’s Granary ’Cue & Brew, which opened in 2012, received national acclaim for its handcrafted beers and barbecue before closing in 2019. After the end of World War I, many Americans were left with a feeling of distrust toward foreigners and radicals, whom they held responsible for the war. The Russian Revolution of 1917 and the founding of the communists’ Third International in 1919 further fanned American fears of radicalism. Race riots and labour unrest added to the tension. Thus, when a series of strikes and indiscriminate bombings began in 1919, the unrelated incidents were all assumed incorrectly in most cases to be communist-inspired. During the ensuing Red Scare, civil liberties were sometimes grossly violated and many innocent aliens were deported. The Red Scare was over within a year, but a general distrust of foreigners, liberal reform movements, and organized labour remained throughout the 1920s. In fact, many viewed Warren G. Harding’s landslide victory in 1920 ( ....
