Mason County Native Sworn In As First Woman to Lead FEMA

9 & 10 News April 27, 2021 Deanne Criswell, who grew up from Free Soil, was sworn in Monday as the new FEMA administrator. Criswell is a graduate of Manistee Catholic Central High School. She served as a member of the Colorado National Guard and was a firefighter for more than 20 years. In 2019, she became the emergency manager for New York City. Then in January, Criswell was nominated by President Joe Biden to become FEMA’s new leader. The U.S Senate confirmed Criswell’s appointment on April 22. Criswell’s uncle, David Dufon, says he couldn’t be more proud of his niece and representing northern Michigan.

Wilhelm: Gibsonburg to reach 150th birthday this year Roy Wilhelm The Village of Gibsonburg is reaching something of a 150th birthday this year. Although the village wasn’t incorporated until 1880, the village’s namesake, W. H. Gibson, and T.D. Stevenson and J. F. Yeasting platted and named the community in August 1871. Gibson was a brevetted brigadier general of the Union Army’s 49th volunteer infantry during the Civil War. The 10th of 11 children to John and Jeannette Coe Gibson, he basically was a lifetime resident of Seneca County, having moved there with his family at the age of 4 months after his father had purchased 320 acres from the federal government.
