Biometric Proposals May Provide Relief To Employers And Courts - Privacy

Earlier this year, the Illinois 102nd General Assembly
introduced Senate Bill 56 (SB 56) and House Bill 559 (HB 559). Both bills
propose amendments to the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).
BIPA regulates how private entities collect, use and share
consumers and employees biometric data, as well as
imposes security requirements.
BIPA provides that [a]ny person aggrieved by a
violation has a right of action and imposes statutory
penalties of $1,000 for each negligent violation or actual damages,
$5,000 for each willful or reckless violation or actual damages, ....

Foot traffic from within the Juvenile Center and proximity to its partners fueled a momentum that resulted in more people visiting the Juvenile Expungement Help Desk. That momentum was abruptly interrupted on March 17, 2020.

Jason (whose name has been changed for this article) is a new client at the Juvenile Expungement Help Desk. He is 32 years old, but when he was 15, Jason was arrested in Chicago for battery and retail theft. The prosecutor filed charges against him in juvenile court, and Jason was found guilty and sentenced to one year of probation. He followed all the rules of his probation, and after a year, the case was closed. That juvenile case was Jason’s only involvement with the criminal legal system, yet he was denied a job with the Chicago Transit Authority because the arrest is still on his record. Peoria famous Black residents: Annie Malone, Preston Jackson and more


Annie Malone
Believed to be the first Black female millionaire, Annie Turnbo Malone was born in Metropolis in 1869 and came to live with an older sister in Peoria when she was orphaned. She attended Peoria Central High School, where her picture still hangs in honor of her status as a special alumnus, according to The Peorian.
With a talent for chemistry, Malone set about developing hair products for women of color, which she marketed to great success.
In the early 1900s Malone started a hair and beauty school in St. Louis, which was one of the first colleges for Black women. Called Poro College after a West African word meaning ‘physical and spiritual growth,’ the school employed hundreds of Black women and became a social center for the community. ....

Former Justice Heiple dies; Championed rights of biological parents, survived impeachment attempt

Justice James D. Heiple, the author of the controversial 1999 “Baby Richard” adoption case ruling, passed away on January 18 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria from complications following a brain hemorrhage. He was 87. 
During his time on the Illinois Supreme Court, Justice Heiple authored 175 majority opinions, 98 dissents, 27 special concurrences and 18 partial concurrences/partial dissents.
“Justice Heiple had a long and distinguished career in the judiciary and legal community,” Chief Justice Anne M. Burke said. “He will forever be remembered for the ‘Baby Richard Case’ and the controversy that came during his time on the Supreme Court. Justice Heiple persevered through those hard times and the Court sends its condolences to his friends and family.” ....
